iPhone / AT&T network upgrade: check your 850Mhz coverage

It seems that AT&T is working on improving its network in the Bay Area. AT&T is deploying new antennas in the 850Mhz spectrum.

While you may see some improvement by just looking at the numbers of bars displayed on the phone, there is a better way to figure out if you are taking advantage of the new 850Mhz spectrum by putting your iPhone in field test mode.

1. On your keypad, enter *3001#12345#* and press dial:

Enter Field Test Mode

2. Once the menu appears, select “UMTS Cell Environment”:

Field test mode screen

3. Then select “UMTS RR Info”:

UMTS info

4. Look at Downlink Frequency: if you see a number in the 4380 range, it means that you are covered by a new 850Mhz tower.
